About
The University of city is that the territory’s oldest institute of higher
learning and additionally an internationally recognized, research crystal
rectifier, comprehensive university. Whereasrecognizing the strength of its
heritage and traditions, HKU additionally engages in frontier research and
educational endeavors that reflect and address the requirements of a fast
ever-changing, knowledge-based world.
There is one factor about the University that may not change: the
importance of its individuals. HKU’s greatest assets have always been, and can
continuously be, its staff, students, alumni and friends. I look forward to
exploring, as a community, the opportunities we tend to have already got and
people that we are able to newly create. Together, we are able to stride with
confidence into the future, with HKU creating ever-greater contributions in
education, research, leadership and public engagement, locally and globally.
The University of HongKong (or HKU, because it is familiarly known to
students, employees and alumni) is that the oldest tertiary education
institution in city.On March 16, 1910, Sir town Lugard, the then Governor of
city, set the muse stone for the University.
The University was 1st incorporated in city as a self-governing body of
students by the University Ordinance on March 30, 1911.
On March 11, 1912, the University was officially opened, and Arts,
Engineering and medicine would become its 1st schools. The college of drugs
evolved from the city school of drugs, based in 1887. Of the College's early
alumni, the most renowned was DrNational leader, often regarded as the founding
father of trendy China.
In Dec 1916, the University commands its 1st congregation, with just
twenty three graduates.It was 10 years when the creation of HKU that ladies
students were admitted for the primary time.
In 1937, Queen Mary Hospital opened and has served because the
University's teaching hospital since then. Before the world war of the second
founding, which might bring educational activities to a halt, there have been
four schools - Arts, Engineering, Medicine, and Science.
After 1945, the University underwent structural developments as post-war
reconstruction efforts began in earnest.
